Derby girls, what do you eat before a bout? What do you avoid? What do you recommend?

being a little more serious, lol, on a training day ,make sure you drink /sip water throughout the day, ESPECIALLY if you have been boozing the night before!
you need to keep hydrated so you can train well and recover quickly.otherwise you will be knackered and will not perform well,
if you feel thirsty you are already dehydrating!
approx 2 ltres a day is good,so aim for that everyday, but defo on training days.

FOOD

avoid fatty foods and processed foods as they do not digest well and will make you feel sick during practice.

you need moderate carbs and some protein. and PLEASE do not come training on an empty stomach, again you cannot run on empty (just like a car).

CARBS
oats
potatoes
pasta
rice
fruits e.g bananas,apples
sweet potatoes
wholemeal bread, pita avoid white bread it is more refined than wholemeal/wholegrain bread
grains
lentils

PROTEIN
fish
chicken
turkey
steak
quorn
tofu
eggs
these are the main ones, to give you an idea
also lots of green veg or salads for your vitamins and minerals.

a light meal or snack ONE hour before training should be ok for most ppl,if you need a boost during practice then have a glucose tablet or an energy drink to hand

after practice you need to eat some good carbs and protein as soon as poss (within half hour preferably) so as to replenish your muscles and energy levels.

protein bars can be good if you are travelling home and want to eat as you go.

but avoid choc bars and crappy foods as you will be hungrier later on

hope this is helpful, any questions ..fire away.

pasta and bananas. I swear by it.

Although you know, sometimes you just have to live with that highway store microwavable ham and cheese melt on your way to the game...

i used to eat tuna and porridge together,so pasta and banana mixed prob be quite tasty..i'll try it and let you know. it was the microwave thing that sounded yukky..lol.

meanwhile on a more serious note..glucose tablets or glucose powder (approx half teaspoon) mixed with your water can give an energy boost during training or a bout.

stay energised !

Because of my lifestyle and the hours I work I find it hard to eat healthy all the time, but recently over the last few months I've been eating alot better, instead of having my usual toast in the morning I'll eat weetabix with chopped banana and by doing that I've found I've not craved a snack during the afternoon :-) I used to drink coca cola all day at work because its free but I've been drinking lots of water and my skin is alot nicer because of it also my tummy alot flatter. I've also starting taking a multivitamin tablet every day and thats made me feel generally alot better in myself... I haven't had a cold for ages! But I hope I haven't spoke too soon haha
